Convert Belkin® Wireless Router into Access Point
Wireless networks are very useful for home office and small businesses. You can share data and system resources at a great speed and accuracy even without being physically connected to any computer or networking devices. You can share Internet connection with all the network users. Since the demand of wireless network card has increased to a large extend, wireless access points are being sold in high numbers in the market. The advantage of access point is that it can act as a point of access for wireless network. The computer which enters the wireless range of access point gets an IP address and can be a part of wireless network. Hence, the clients or friends who need to access your network, just need to enter your office or home to use the shared device and Internet connection based on permission and user privileges that you have configured for your network. Access points are costly when compared to wireless routers. So, you can buy a wireless router and convert it into an access point.
- Configure router
- Set-up an access point
- Issues and fixes
If you have to convert Belkin Wireless Routers into an access point, you need to change the IP settings on the router configuration page. Now, connect the wireless router physically to a computer using a network cable and type in the routers IP address in web browser. Then log in to the router configuration page. By default, the router act as a DHCP server. You need to disable the DHCP of one router to ensure that only one DHCP server exists on the router. You need to change the router IP address to the one which is different from the other router. But both the IP Addresses should be of same range. All the computers and the other router (Access Point) can obtain an IP address from the first router.
Set-up an access point
Once you change the IP settings, the router is ready to act as an access point. You can connect the access point to the router using a network cable. You can also set the access point at a place where the range of first router ends. This would widen the wireless range and also improve the network signals.
IP conflict can arise, if any of the computers or the routers are using the same IP address. To avoid such issues, make sure that you carefully change the IP address of the router and ensure that all computers are obtaining IP address from DHCP. To avoid poor network signal, place the router in a central position of the network and place the access point in a place where computers are receiving poor signals. This way you can effectively manage the wireless network. Avoid using wireless devices at the frequency that your wireless network uses. Devices with same frequency can create a conflict and may result in network outages.
