Alcatel-Lucent, the Paris-based manufacturer of telecommunications gear, has designed a router that can be used at the center of Internet providers’ networks, a market dominated by Cisco Systems Inc. and Juniper Networks Inc. The new routers are designed to cut the amount of hardware that a telecommunications-service provider needs.

The product 7950 XRS router is a device to speed packets of data along networks. According to the company, the core router, which operates at large-network junction points, took three years to develop and is designed to support as much as 6.4 terabits — or 6.4 trillion bits — per second of data traffic, making it suitable for the largest potential customers such as AT&T Inc. and BT Group Plc.

Alcatel-Lucent has been selling smaller-scale routers designed for the perimeter of the Internet, as distinct from the core. The company is entering the core market with the help of a processor that keeps power consumption down while handling more data traffic.

After Buffalo Technology, it is the turn of NETGEAR to release its own 802.11ac wireless router, the R6300. In addition to the flagship 802.11ac router, NETGEAR has also announced a slimmed down version – the R6200 – and the A6200 Wi-Fi USB dongle.

NETGEAR claims that the company is the first to bring 802.11ac products to market, even though Buffalo Technology’s first 802.11ac router and an 802.11ac media bridge are already on sale on Frys.com and Newegg.com. To prove this a NETGEAR official said during the press event that he had ordered a Buffalo unit from Newgg in order to verify its actual availability, but he had not yet received it.

The NETGEAR R6300 Wi-Fi router supports combined Wi-Fi speeds up to 1750 Mbps, while the NETGEAR R6200 Wi-Fi Router supports approximate combined Wi-Fi speeds up to 1200 Mbps and has a lower price point. Both are backward compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n to provide optimum interoperability with legacy Wi-Fi devices and maintaining maximum performance on Wireless-n.

Ericsson has announced the launch of its Smart Cloud Accelerator solution, which complements Ericsson’s portfolio of content delivery options consisting of the Mobile Cloud Accelerator (MCA).

The latest addition to the SSR 8000 family of Ericsson is the SSR 8010 Smart Services Router (SSR). The SSR 8000 is a key component of Ericsson’s portfolio of 4th-generation IP networking solutions launched in 2011. The portfolio is ideal for mobile and fixed IP backhaul that can aggregate 2G, 3G, 4G and fixed access traffic.

The 10-slot SSR 8010 complements the 20-slot SSR 8020, enabling operators to deploy the SSR family in different regions of the network: IP Edge and aggregation. The SSR 8010 consumes just 3.3 watts per gigabit of traffic throughput, and is ideal for applications where 10 available slots will be optimal to meet current capacity and upcoming growth. Capacity planning will drive the decision and a customer can deploy both 8010 and 8020 nodes in the same network. The SSR 8010′s smaller footprint provides additional flexibility for operators to deploy networks with distributed architectures.

The SSR 8010 will be commercially available in third quarter of 2012.

ZyXEL Communications, a broadband networking company that offers Internet products and solutions, has announced the release of its NBG-419N v2 Wireless N NetUSB router, a mainstream wireless router designed to meet the demands of the home market.

This new version of the NBG-419N, the successful predecessor that got a positive response from customers and the global media, offers not only the accredited features, but also more state-of-the-art design to benefit users with refreshing home wireless networking experience.

According to Alex Gray, senior vice president and general manager at Juniper Networks, “The main objective is to make securing and managing the growing number of mobile computing devices entering the work environment easier for businesses.”

“IT managers are trying to cope with the influx of mobile devices into the workplace,” Gray said in a statement. “Juniper’s holistic approach advances security, simplifies the user experience and expands device support.”

The new products and features in the Simply Connected Portfolio include: Juniper Networks SRX550 Services Gateway, SRX110 Services Gateway, WLA322 and WLA321 Series Wireless LAN Access Points, Junos Pulse Access Control Service/UAC and Junos Pulse Secure Access Service/SSL VPN and updates to AppSecure in the latest Junos software release across the entire SRX Series.
