Fix the Internet connection sharing error
Learn how to configure the network adapter and other components to troubleshoot Internet connection sharing errors
The Internet connection sharing error can occur mainly due to incorrect settings of the registry entries. If the LAN connection that is selected as the private network is not present or is disconnected from the network, it may lead to Internet connection sharing errors. You need to ensure that the LAN adapter is connected before enabling Internet connection sharing. This problem is caused if the Internet Protocol is already in use on some other computer on your network. If an IP address conflict occurs then you may get the Internet connection sharing error. If the dependency services or group fails to start then you can encounter Internet connection sharing problem. The cause can also be due to the wireless and Ethernet drivers conflict.
Following are the ways to fix the Internet connection sharing errors:
- Resetting the network adapters
- Verify that the correct components are installed
- Use Registry Editor
Resetting the network adapters
You need to reset the network adapters on both the computers that are used in the Internet connection sharing set-up. For resetting you need to go to the computer that is hosting the shared connection and then click ‘Start’. Then click on ‘Run’ box and then type ‘cmd’ and press ‘Enter’. In the Command Prompt window type ‘ipconfig’ and retrieve new settings from your router. Then go to the second computer and proceed in the same way that you have done in the first computer. Then open the ‘Control Panel’ and choose ‘Network and sharing center’ and click on ‘Troubleshoot problems’ on the left pane of the window. Then click on ‘Network adapter’ and follow the instructions to troubleshoot the issues.
Verify that the correct components are installed
To troubleshoot the Internet connection sharing error you need to verify that the correct components are installed on the host. You need to check the components in network properties by clicking ‘Start’ menu and then point to ‘Settings’ to choose ‘Control Panel’. Then select ‘Network’ option. On the ‘Configuration’ tab, view the option of ‘The following network components are installed’ box to verify that both the TCP or IP (Shared) and TCP or IP (Home) components are listed.
If one or more registry keys are damaged, it may cause the Internet connection sharing error. In order to resolve this problem you have to use the Registry Editor. In network properties, choose the Registry Editor and open the required key. Check the number of subkeys under the NetTrans folder with the number of instances of protocols installed in the network configuration. You need to rebuild the key and then add the client for Microsoft Networks, and then click 'Ok'.
