Tips to fix issues with Router Booting Process
What do you understand by router booting process? Explain the different methods for resolving issues with it.
Router is a networking device that forwards data packets along networks. Router in a network decides that through which route a data packet should go to reach the destination. Because in a network there a lot of ways to reach the destination. So at the time when a data packet is sent on the network, the router only decides the shortest path to reach the destination for it. Router booting process is a process on which the router is getting started for functioning. The process mainly contains four steps, such as, performing the post, loading the bootstrap program, locating and loading the Cisco IOS software, and locating and loading the startup configuration file or entering setup mode. There are a number of problems linked with the booting process of router. All such problems can be solved easily by making the settings for the router and configurations on the system.
Following details give users information on the booting process of router:
- Performing the POST
- Loading the bootstrap program
- Locating and loading the Cisco IOS software
Performing the POST
POST is the abbreviation of Power On Self Test. It is a common process on all kind of computer devices. During this process the device, i.e. the router will check its hardware. When the router is powered on, the POST process will start and it will conduct a self test that all the hardware components are properly connected to the router. If there are any errors with any of the components, then it will be reported at the time of POST. After the POST operation is over, the bootstrap program will begin.
Loading the Bootstrap program
Bootstrap is a program which enables the system to start working. After the completion of POST, bootstrap program will start automatically. Initially the bootstrap program is copied to the RAM from ROM. Then the CPU will execute the instructions in the bootstrap program on the Ram. Main process in bootstrap is to locate and load the Cisco ISO program to RAM and run it.
The IOS program is commonly stored on the flash memory. Also this IOS can be stored in places like TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) server. Sometimes it fails to locate the IOS completely. In such cases, only a scaled-down version of the IOS is copied to RAM. Using that small version of IOS, the problems related with the complete downloading of IOS is diagnosed and it will download the entire version of IOS to RAM.
