IP Address Conflict with Another System on Network
Get to know more about IP address conflict with another system on the network
TCP/IP are one of the most commonly used network protocols. A set of numbers is provided to each computer and device in the network in order to communicate with each other. This set of number is called IP address. Every computer or device is identified by an IP address. Hence, the IP address of a computer in a network should be unique. IP address conflict issue arises when two computers in the same network share the same IP address. Conflicting computers will not be able to communicate with other computers in the network. There are two ways to provide IP address to computers in the network. The first method is to specify the IP address manually and the other one is to configure a DHCP service in the network which would automatically supply unique IP addresses to computers.
Following are methods to fix IP address conflict with another system on a network:
- Identify the Conflict
- Determine a New IP
- Change IP Address
Identify the Conflict
There could be many computers and devices in the network and you need to identify which computers or devices are conflicting with each other. To identify the IP address of a computer, you can go to command prompt and type in the command "IPCONFIG /ALL" and hit 'Enter'. All information about the IP settings would be displayed on the screen. The gateway address shown in a computer would be the address of the router, if you are using a wireless network. No computers in the network should have the same IP address of a router or any other computer.
Determine New IP
Once you identify the issue, it is time to change the IP address. The IP address of computers and devices in the network should fall under same IP range. If you have a wireless router or a computer which runs DHCP service, you can set the computer to obtain the IP address automatically. If your network uses a static IP address, you need to find an IP address of same range that is not being used in the network.
To manually change the IP address, you can go to 'Control Panel' and then on network and sharing center or network connections depending on the operating system. You need to go to 'Manage Network Connection'; right click on the local area connection and click 'Properties'. You need to go to the 'TCP/IP Properties' screen and change the IP address or set it to obtain the IP from DHCP.
