'My Network Places' folder empty
Reason behind the 'My Network Places' folder being empty issue
The ‘My Network Places’ option is used for browsing network resources. These network resources can be shared file folders on other computers, web links or networked local printers. It has options which allow you to add, search and remotely access the network resources. Sometimes, when you open the 'My Network Places' option, you will find the folder to be empty. This could happen due to many reasons. The main reason is that if the workgroup name is different from that of others then those computers will be visible in the folder. Similarly if the 'File and Printer Sharing' option is turned off, even then the problem will exist. Thus by making changes in these features, the problem can be fixed and all the connections can be displayed in the 'My Network Places' folder.
Following paragraphs provide information on how to fix the 'My Network Places' folder being empty issue:
- Turning on File and Printer Sharing
- Same workgroup or domain
- Switching between static and DHCP IP addresses
Turning on File and Printer Sharing
In order to turn on the 'File and Printer Sharing' option, initially you need to click on 'Network Connection' option of the 'Control Panel'. Then you need to right-click on 'Local Area Connection' option to select the 'Properties' option. In the general tab of the corresponding window, you need to make sure that the 'File and Printer Sharing' for Microsoft Network and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) options are checked and so the process is completed.
Same workgroup or domain
In order to have names of other computers on the network to be displayed in the 'My Network Places' list, all the computers must be on the same workgroup or domain. In order to make sure about it, you need to right-click on 'My Computer' to select the 'Properties' option. In the corresponding 'Computer Name' tab, if the name specified besides the 'Workgroup' is different, then you need to change it to the common name by clicking on the 'Change' option.
Another way to fix the problem is to switch between static IP address and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). As a result, the TCP/IP configurations will be reset and so any corruption in IP settings can be fixed. Thus you can find the problem fixed and the network connections will be displayed in the 'My Network Places' folder instead of that folder being empty.
