Configuring DHCP Server for network
What is DHCP Server and what is its role?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used for assigning dynamic IP addresses to the different devices in a network. Dynamic addressing changes the IP address of the devices whenever they are connected to a network. Sometimes, the IP address will automatically change when it is connected to the system. This happens when there are some other devices with the same IP address. If we are manually assigning the IP address to the system, there is a chance that a conflict could take place. DHCP allows a computer or a device to join a network without a predefined IP address. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are commonly using DHCP for allowing their customers to join their network. DHCP server settings are commonly used in broadband router firmware.
Following details give users more information on network DHCP server:
- Installing DHCP server
- Configuring the server
- Points to remember
Installing DHCP server
To install the DHCP server, click on ‘Start’ and then select ‘Control Panel’. Then open the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ menu. Then click on the ‘Add/Remove Windows Components' button. The ‘Windows Components Wizard’ will start. Then select the ‘Networking Services’ option in the list. Then tick the checkbox next to ‘Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol’ and then click on ‘OK’. Windows will start copying the necessary files. At that time, it will ask for the installation CD. After the operation is completed, click on ‘Finish’ to close the wizard.
Configuring the server
For configuring the server, click on the ‘Start’ button and select ‘Control Panel’. Then select ‘the Network Connection’ menu. Then double click on ‘Local Area Connection’ and it will open a configuration window. Then click on ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ and select ‘Properties’. Then in the newly opened window, select the option ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’ and click on ‘Ok’. This will help you configure the DHCP server automatically in your system and after this, click on ‘Ok’ to complete the process.
Even after the completion of the configuration, there are some chances that the configuration could be lost. In such cases, it is better to remember how the settings are to be restored. For this, we can repeat the same steps that are used for configuring the server. Also, if the system is assigned by a static IP address, i.e., the IP address is configured manually in the system and then a problem occurs, we can solve the problem by assigning the dynamic IP address with the help of the DHCP server.
