Virtual Private Network Settings
How does one set up a virtual private network in a system?
Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is an advanced form of computer networking. It is a network technology that is used for a secure network connection over a public network. The public network can be the Internet or there could be a private network. A VPN network is similar to a Wide Area Networking (WAN) in its functioning. This is because it can connect over large distances like WAN. Different kind of firms like educational institutions, multinational companies etc. use VPN to connect their campuses that are located in different countries. While setting up a VPN, there are some points that one needs to remember. If we cannot connect to VPN from our home, we need to check the settings of our home router. This is because routers may have built-in firewalls that can be reconfigured in order to access a network.
Following details give users more information on Virtual Private Network settings:
- Setting up VPN router
- Setting up Client
Setting up VPN router
First log on to the router and select the 'VPN' tab. In some routers, you will find a ‘PPTP’ tab. Then specify the protocol that you want to use. Usually, we use point-to-point tunneling protocol (PPTP). Then specify the list of users; for this, use the router’s manual. The format used most commonly is *username*password*. Then use the IP address that is available; set it for internal network. The VPN setting will be completed and then you can save it.
For configuring the server, first click on the ‘Start’ button and then select ‘Settings and Network Connections’. Then click on ‘Create new connection’ and then press the ‘Next’ button. Then select the ‘Set up Advanced Connection’. Click on ‘Accept Incoming Connections’ and press the ‘Next’ button. Check the ‘Allow Virtual Private Connections’ option. Windows would provide a username and password to the user. Click on ‘Next’ and then click on ‘Finish’. Click on ‘Start’ and then click ‘Run’. Type ‘cmd’ in the 'Run' box and press 'Enter'. Then type ‘IPCONFIG all’ on the window. It will give you the IP address of the server. Click on the ‘Save’ button on the router configuration and then restart the router. Thus, the configuration process will be completed.
In order to set up the client, first right click on ‘Network Connections’ on the desktop. Then choose ‘Create a New Connection’. Then click on ‘Connect to the Network at My Workplace’ from the options available and then click on ‘Next’. Now give a new name for the VPN connection and select ‘Do Not Dial the Initial Connection’. Click on ‘Next’ and enter the external IP address of the VPN server. Then select either 'My Use Only' or 'Everybody on This Computer'. Then click ‘Next’. Add a shortcut to the desktop if you want and then click on ‘Finish’ to complete the process. Thus, the client setting process will be completed.
