Disable Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) in Windows® 7
What is IPv6? How to disable it in Windows 7?
Windows 7 is the latest operating system from Microsoft and belongs to the Windows operating system series. Windows 7 is available in three editions — Windows 7 Home Edition, Windows 7 Professional Edition, and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition. Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is an advanced version of IPv4 and comes with several new features. These features include efficient and hierarchical addressing and routing infrastructure, built in security, new header format, and stateless and stateful address configuration. IPv6 replaces several problems with IPv4 such as auto configuration, security, address depletion, and extensibility. Normally in Windows 7 we can disable IPv6 temporarily from the ‘Network Connection’ options. But it will enable again when we restart the system. However we can disable it permanently from the system registry.
Some of the features of IPv6 and tips to disable IPv6 in Windows 7 operating system are given below:
- Features of IPv6
- Disabling IPv6 temporarily
- Disabling IPv6 permanently
Features of IPv6
IPv6 supports most of Windows-based operating systems such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc. IPv6 is the latest version of IP and is simple and easier to operate. IPv6 offers Neighbor Discovery Protocol which includes a series of Internet Control Message Protocols to manage the interaction of neighboring nodes. Extensibility, header formats, large address space, etc. are other features offered by IPv6.
Disabling IPv6 temporarily
In order to disable IPv6 temporarily in Windows 7 operating system, open the ‘Control Panel’ from the ‘Start’ menu. Then select ‘Network Sharing Centre’ and click on ‘Change Adapter Settings’. You can select the ‘Properties’ by right-clicking any of the network adapters such as ‘Local Area Connection’. Then uncheck ‘Internet Protocol Version 6’ and click on ‘OK’. Now, IPv6 is disabled. But it gets enabled again once the system restarts.
When we disable it from the ‘Network Connection’ in the ‘Control Panel’, IPv6 will not disable permanently. We can disable it permanently from the Windows registry. In order to open the Windows registry, click on ‘Start’ menu, select ‘Run’ and type ‘regedit’ on the dialogue box. Then hit ‘Enter’ and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet –> services –> TCPIP6 –> Parameters key. Then right-click on the parameters and select ‘New –> Dword Value’. Then set the value of ‘DisabledComponents’ to 0 and click ‘OK’. Restart the system and now IPv6 is completely removed from your Windows 7 operating system.
