Methods to set-up a cable modem
What is the importance of a cable modem?
Usage of cable modems are increasing day by day because cable modems offer a high speed Internet connection. Before cable modems were released, telephone lines were used to connect users to the Internet which had lots of limitations. Now, you can use your cable TV connection to go online at high speed. You can download games, songs, movies and other programs in short time. Cable connection from a wall outlet is connected to the modem which receives signals from a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) installed at the local cable station to serve you with a lightning speed Internet connection. You need to sign up for an Internet account with a service provider who provides a cable Internet connection in your area. Usually the cable modem is supplied by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and installation of a modem is very simple.
Here are the methods to set-up a cable modem:
- Installation of a network card
- Connect a cable modem
- Turn on a cable modem
Installation of a network card
You need a network card on your computer to avail the high speed Internet connection using a cable modem. Most computers come with a network card but if you do not have a network card on your computer, you need to buy a network card, plug it in to the PCI slot and install a driver program to make the network card work. Once the network card is successfully installed, you can see the network card name listed under the network adapter in Device Manager and you can see a two computer icon in the system tray which indicates the connection status.
Connect cable modem
You need to connect a coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the modem and then you can connect one end of a UTP cable cribbed with a RJ45 connector (Network cable) to modem and the other end of the same network cable should be connected to the network port of the Ethernet card on your computer.
Stable power has to be supplied to the modem and once all the connections are made, the modem turns on and power cycle happens during which the modem tries to connect to the Internet Service Provider to validate your account and to provide you with an Internet connection. Once the power cycle completes, you can see the power LED glowing and the cable LED blinking. Now, you can try to open websites and see if you can go online. If you are not able to go online, you can hit the 'Reset' button found at the bottom of the modem, wait for the modem to reboot and then try to go online.
