What is the need to block IP address in router
People are using routers for business and home use. Anyone working on routers must have understanding of theory of networking, more specifically installation of routers, machine addressing system, network address translation(NAT), dynamic host configuration protocol(DHCP), and Domain naming system(DNS). Computer Addressing- ach computer in the network must have some sorts of identification assigned to it. IP address is used to have an identification of the computer on the network.

A router, a device that directs traffic in packets destined for a device outside of local area network. All traffic between directly connected devices take place using layer 2. Layer 2 deals with the Frames. On the other hand Layer 3 deals with packets. Router is responsible for the data packets to communicate through the network to ensure that the data packets reach the correct destinations. Router checks some data like destination address and type of protocol to ensure the correct delivery of the data packets. A router is a multi homed device having more than one Ethernet port. IP address should be given for each port. The WAN side IP addresses must have public IP addresses, while LAN side could be either public or private IP addresses. Public IP address is given by the broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP), like – 188.8.131.52. For the LAN side, any of the private IP address groups may be used like 192.168.0.1.

IP filtering is a method used to block computers on an internal network from accessing the Internet. Usually this is used on machines that are acting as the servers of the network. It stops users from accessing the Internet in order to defend these machines from malicious objects. You can filter IP addresses on your router using the administrator console provided by the router manufacturer. After the block is assembled, user machines present in the list that are to be filtered will not be visible anymore.
How to create router firewall rules to block IP addresses: Blocking access to those IP addresses would happen as a WAN destination. Remove any block used in your local network. Block incoming traffic from those addresses and outgoing traffic to those addresses with your firewall. If you are using your hosts file, you will only be able to block outgoing. For example: Here is the list: 0.0.0.0/7
184.108.40.206/8, 220.127.116.11/8, 10.0.0.0/8 and so on. If your home network uses 192.168.xxx.xxx, remove 192.168.0.0/16 from the above list and block the rest. None of those addresses should be used on the Internet today. It is possible to open a smaller hole around your home network, but start with this. You may also want to remove the 169.254 block; your home network may use those, depending on configuration.
Open the web browser that you are using in your system. Now enter the IP address of the router that is known to you in the space of address bar. Give the username and password of the admin. Click the tab named "Security". Now click “Filter” in the newly opened window. Text boxes will be displayed in a list where the IP addresses that are to be clocked can be entered. Just enter the range of IP address that are to be blocked. Here you can give more than one IP address. Now just give the option for saving these settings.
