Ways of Bridging Wireless Routers
Get to know more about on how to bridge wireless routers
Wireless networks are largely used because they are reliable, stable and no wires are used. You can install wireless network cards on every computer and setup a wireless router and all computers in the network will communicate with each other through the router. Wireless network works on wireless signals. Wireless router and wireless network cards on computers transmit and receive wireless signals to communicate with each other. The computer which is closest to the router will receive better network signals than the one which is kept far away from the router. Once a computer becomes a part of the network, a wireless network icon is displayed in the system tray. You can double click on the wireless network icon to check the signal strength. Bridging is a technique through which two routers are merged to boost wireless signals or to combine two networks. The primary router will work as usual and the secondary router is placed in a location where the signals of the primary router start to weaken. All the computers that connect to the secondary router will have access to the primary router and the network.
Following are ways to bridge wireless routers:
- Access Router Configuration Page
- Enable Bridge Mode
- Issues and Fixes
Access Router Configuration Page
All routers include a firmware program which controls the work flow of the router and the firmware program on the secondary router has to be accessed to enable the bridge mode. To access the router configuration page (Interface of the firmware), you need to connect the router directly to the computer using a network cable; set the computer to obtain the IP address from the DHCP and restart the computer. Once the computer is restarted, you need to open up Internet Explorer and type in the IP address of the router. You will be prompted to enter the admin username and password and once you enter the user name and the password, you will be given access to change the settings.
Enable Bridge Mode
You need to navigate through the modem configuration page of the secondary router and enable bridge mode and save settings. The router would be restarted and all the computers that connect to the secondary router can avail the services provided by the primary router. If the routers belong to different networks, once the bridge mode is enabled, they become one network.
Enabling bridge modem is an easy process but there are some issues that may arise when configuring the bridge mode. The firewall settings can block the bridge mode connection. So, disable the firewall of the secondary router. Both routers may have same IP address which will result in IP conflict; to avoid such issues, you need to change the IP address of the secondary router to a different one of the same range that the primary router is working with.
