Methods to set-up a wireless router
What is the procedure for setting up a wireless router?
Computer networks are being used by almost all users who have two or more computers. You can share data, Internet connection and printers with other users on a network. There are two types of network, one is wired and the other is wireless network. Wireless networks are more convenient than wired networks because computers can effectively communicate with each other without being the limitation of wires. Each computer in a wireless network should have a wireless network card which transmits and receives wireless network signals in order to form a network. Wireless router is the central point and most important component of a wireless network. There are different makes and models of wireless routers which are capable of delivering high performance.
Here are some tips to set-up a wireless router:
- Connecting and configuring
- Router placement
- Connecting computers to the router
Connecting and configuring
As the first step, you need to unpack the router and connect the power cable and connect a network cable from the router to the Ethernet port of a computer. Wireless routers include a firmware program embedded on the router which holds the router settings and runs various network services. The firmware program also provides a router configuration interface to the user to customize router settings. To access the router configuration page, you need to type in the IP address of the router in Internet Explorer and press 'Enter.' You will be prompted to enter the administrator user name and password which you can find in the router manual. Once you enter the log in information, you can configure the router settings according to the network requirements.
Placement of the router has to be taken very seriously for a stable wireless network. As discussed earlier, each computer in the network communicates with each other through the router. So, once the router is configured, you can unplug the network cable and place the router in a location where distance between each computer in the network to the router is almost the same. This way all computers will receive healthy network signals.
A service called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) runs in the router which supplies an IP address to computers in a wireless network. So, if the computer holds an IP address of its own which does not match the IP range of the router, the computer will connect to the router. So, ensure that the driver program for the wireless network card is installed and set your computer to obtain IP address from DHCP. You can run the wireless network setup wizard to complete the wireless network set-up.
