Need to set-up a WEP key
WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy is a security algorithm for wireless networks. The setting up of a WEP key for a SMC router will increase the security level of the device. You can configure the router device based on WEP encryption and thus provide the option to encrypt the wireless network. Different types of encryption standards are available. Among them, WEP is the most powerful.
Steps to set-up a WEP key
Open the web browser and type the address of the router web interface on the address bar. Login to the router web page just by clicking on the login button since the password will be blank by default. Then on the webpage, select the 'Advanced Setup' option. Choose the wireless option at the left side of the window and then select the encryption option. Choose any of the WEP modes, either the 64-bit or the 128-bit, from the WEP mode drop down option. Enter the hex digits for key 1 to key 4. Now save the settings. Remember the key that is entered.
A 128-bit WEP mode is more secure than a 64-bit mode among WEP modes. You must provide 10 hex digits for 64-bit encryption and 26 hex digits for 128-bit encryption while entering the passphrase. Set-up the same encryption settings on the computer in the wireless network connections option for avoiding a wireless connection from getting lost. For this process, the operating system Wireless Manager should be present on the system. Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems are most suitable for these settings.
