Enable DHCP in Windows® 7
Know how to enable DHCP in Windows 7.
For a device to connect to the Internet it is necessary to have an IP address. DHCP is a protocol that has the function of assigning dynamic IP addresses to the devices on a network. DHCP is the abbreviation of Dynamic Host Control Protocol. By having dynamic addressing, every device will have different IP address whenever it is connected to the network. Administration becomes easy because of this dynamic addressing since software keeps track of IP address. Hence, there is no difficulty in adding a new computer to network as manually assigning IP address is not required. At the same time, there will not be any IP address conflict as in case of static addressing since the addressing is not done manually.
Following are the information on enabling DHCP on Windows 7:

- Points to remember
Need of DHCP
If the IP addressing is done manually then a lot of manual work has to be done which is time consuming and chances of error are more. Similarly, if a computer is changing the network frequently then it becomes meaningless in assigning a permanent address. Hence, taking all these points into consideration dynamic addressing is preferred.
Initially, open the network connection by clicking on 'View Network Connection' option of 'Network and Sharing Center' in Control Panel of Start menu. You need to right click on desired network adapter and click on 'Properties' option. Then in the 'Networking' tab, under 'This connection uses the following items' option, click either 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' or 'Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)' followed by clicking on 'Properties'. In the corresponding dialog box, select either 'Obtain an IP address automatically' or 'Use the following IP address' and then click on 'Ok' to enable DHCP in your Windows 7.
Important point that you should note is that while configuring network adapter you can choose either 'Obtain an IP address automatically' or 'Use the following IP address' option. If you manually specify IP address, the default gateway will be IP address present in the default gateway box. On choosing the first option, DHCP server will assign your computer the default gateway.
