Wireless network mode
Learn about the infrastructure and ad hoc wireless network modes
Wireless network is implemented between computers without any cable connection. It is mainly based on IEEE 802.11 networking bandwidth. It can be used for sharing files, games and Internet telephony. Some of the requirements of the wireless network are network adapter, router and Wi-Fi, networking card, Kernel configuration, and so on. Wireless LAN is a type of wireless network that can transmit data from one computer to another in the network through radio signals. There are two types of modes used in a wireless network. They are infrastructure mode and an ad hoc mode for a wireless network.
The following are things to know about infrastructure and ad hoc wireless network mode:
- Infrastructure mode
- Ad Hoc mode
- Points to remember
Infrastructure mode is a type of wireless mode. It is used to connect wireless networks with Wi-Fi devices like laptops which are allowed to connect to the network by using an Access Point (AP). Access Points are routers that are used to connect to the Internet using Ethernet port to clients. It can be set-up by plugging in Ethernet port and then configuring the access point. Enter the URL of the access address in the web browser. Type the username and password. You have to name the connection and enable its mode to infrastructure. You have to then assign SSID in the router. Then, scan for wireless adapter to get connected to the available wireless network.
Ad Hoc mode
Another type of wireless network mode is ad hoc mode which is available for Wi-Fi connectivity. Here, devices can communicate with each other and no access point is needed at all. Ad Hoc mode can be set-up by configuring wireless adapters manually. To make the Internet connection, you have to use the same name of channel and SSID for all the devices.
Infrastructure mode used is usually more stable with improved security features like WEP. It is easy to manage and delivers efficient performance. It can be used for any number of devices in the network. Ad Hoc mode is advantageous at home environments. It requires no access point and so costs less. It can be used when access points in the infrastructure mode are malfunctioning in the network.
